Full time Teacher of the Deaf (Band 7) - Great Ormond Street Hospital - Cochlear Implant Programme

LONDON, WC1N 3JH
Tel: 0791 70 40 002
Email: catharine.infield@gosh.nhs.uk
Web: www.jobs.nhs.uk
GOSH is an international centre of excellence in paediatric care, with a history of ENT and audiological care. We are a long established Cochlear Implant Programme, looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Teacher of the Deaf to join our multi-disciplinary team at a very exciting time, both within our programme and at a national level.

We are currently caring for around 400 patients and we expect to implant 60 children this financial year. In addition to this work we have a newly approved business plan to cater for the children who require a sequential second side implant, which starts in September.

You will work with the Principal Teacher of the Deaf and the Hearing Therapist to ensure that parents, children and local support services are informed and supported during the assessment process, and, if the child proceeds to a cochlear implant, in the peri-operative and post-operative period, progressing to long term habillitation. You will have a key role in giving information, liaison and supporting a wide range of infants and children to develop listening and communication skills.

You will work very closely with a friendly and supportive multidisciplinary team, including Speech and Language Therapists, Clinical Psychologists, Audiological Scientists, Audiological Physicians (both Consultant and Specialist Registrars) and ENT Consultant surgeons, Ward staff and Admin staff delivering services to in line with the National Guidelines and the GOSH Mission Statement.

You will work in a flexible way so you will need to be well organised and a good time manager. You will undertake home, nursery and school visits as required, work in the clinic independently and with colleagues. You will give formal or informal training and support to colleagues in the community. Many of your visits can be done on public transport but a driving licence and access to a car are highly desirable. Visits are largely in Greater London, the Home Counties and the South Coast.

You will have excellent interpersonal skills. You will understand parents’ right to make informed decisions and facilitate discussion and problem solving in a reflective and positive way. You will have a particular interest in developing your professional practice in parental support and in the assessment and support of babies and very young children, with an interest in working collaboratively with local Teachers of the Deaf in peripatetic services and in units and schools to develop children’s listening skills. Experience of developing listening skills and an interest in working with families, babies and young children is essential.

You will be interested in contributing to research and will work methodically to collect and organise data on children’s outcomes. You will be confident about using IT and will be taught to use databases and spread sheets to record information. You will be meticulous about the confidentiality and security of patients’ data.

You will be excited by the unparalleled opportunities for learning and professional development offered by GOSH. We deal with a very wide range of children so an interest in developing expertise in more complex deaf children, for example children with motor disorders or learning difficulties, would be a distinct advantage. An interest in developing listening skills in young deaf children and babies is essential.

GOSH employees have excellent support from the hospital which offers season ticket loans, a cycle scheme, training bursaries and a lively programme of social events (which are well supported by CIP staff!)
