Harold Johnson (Univ Michigan USA) presents his thoughts about future developments for those working in deafe duction. Teachers represent the single largest factor that influences the academic success of students. Instructional experiences, content knowledge and content specific instructional strategies represent the 'core' competencies of effective teachers. This article shares the 'core' competencies of effective teachers of students who are deaf/hard of hearing (d/hh). In addition, the article identifies a collaborative strategy that could be used by U.K. and U.S. deaf education teachers and the universities to reduce isolation, recognize excellence and foster collaboration in the field of Deaf Education.
