The British Association of Teachers of the Deaf
Promoting Excellence in Deaf Education

A Teacher of the Deaf wishes to involve English ToDs in a musical project being developed and for which they are hoping to gain European Comenius funding.

The pupils involved would be 11-15 years old and the overall aim of the project is to develop, through exchange and collaboration, activities incorporating music, Sign Language, written language and drama. A principal aim is to show that deafness and music can be mutually enriching. Hearing pupils will also be involved in the project.

The project would last 3 to 4 years and will use both traditional musical instruments and special instruments called Baschet Structures which are specifically used with deaf students.

The project will have three phases:

  1. Exchange and research between European partners, preparatory visits, language learning opportunities and collaborative working to make the bid for Comenius funding.

  2. If the bid is accepted, research into music with deaf pupils and development of the final product including the dramatic and video elements.

  3. Complete and disseminate the outcomes of the project.

If you are interested in learning more about this project, please let me know and I will pass on some more information (which is in French) and email contacts.
