This page gives information about courses which are available for the further training and development of Teachers of the Deaf once they have gained the mandatory qualification.

MA Educational Studies (Hearing Impairment)

Qualified Teachers of the Deaf with a PG Diploma level mandatory qualification have the option to top this up to an MA. This requires 1 additional year of study to undertake a dissertation module. Applicants must have a PG Diploma qualification attained within the last 5 years.

MSC/PGDIP in Educational Studies (Educational Audiology)

The course prepares people to become Educational Audiologists, (i.e. Audiology Practitioners who work with deaf children in education) as part of a multidisciplinary team.

This is a post-qualification pathway targeted at Teachers of the Deaf, audiologists and other practitioners who work or are intending to work with very young children and babies who are deaf and their families.

Auditory Verbal UK

Auditory Verbal Therapy Part 1 training – Working Through Audition

This RCSLT approved course comprises six full days of practical training over six months with video and written assignments between training days. It is designed for SLTs, ToDs and audiologists who want to become more auditory in their approach when working with hearing-impaired children and for those who wish to qualify as LSLS CertAVT®s. This training is accredited by the AG Bell Academy (the governing body for LSLS CertAVT®s globally).

Auditory Verbal Therapy Part 2 training – AV Principles in Everyday Practice

Open to professionals who have successfully completed Part 1 of our Training Package and want to become Certified Auditory Verbal Therapists, this training is limited to three delegates per group and has been developed to meet the eligibility criteria set by the AG Bell Academy to sit the LSLS CertAVT® examination. Over a period of 2½ years of small group tuition and individual mentoring, participants will hone their practical therapy skills and theoretical knowledge.

Signature level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning with Specialism for Deaf Learners at the City of Oxford college

Audience: This qualification is listed as appropriate for learners 19+. The course is suitable for those who work, or wish to work in education, supporting learners with a hearing impairment. Specialist Teaching Assistants (TAs) working with children with a hearing impairment and Communication Support Workers (CSWs) work as part of a multi-agency team alongside other professionals including teachers, teachers of the deaf, speech and language therapists and paediatric audiologists. To be a CSW you will need to have additional sign language qualifications (minimum BSL level 2). Whilst this course does not provide sign language training there are sign language courses available that students may wish to take in addition to this qualification.

Course summary: The aim of the certificate is to provide specialist TAs and CSWs, with underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills in order to effectively fulfil the role. The aim of the certificate is to provide the knowledge, understanding and skills required to undertake the role of specialist TA and CSW supporting children and young people with a hearing loss to access education.

What do I learn? Candidates will learn how to:

  • Support children and young people with hearing impairment by supporting and facilitating their communication and understanding.
  • Support children and young people with hearing impairment to access the curriculum using appropriate support strategies.
  • Adapt learning materials so that children and young people with hearing impairment can access them.
  • Suggest ways the educational environment can be improved to make it easier for children and young people with hearing impairment to access learning.

What do I gain? A Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning with Specialism for Deaf Learners.

What do I need?

  • 4 GCSEs or equivalent preferably including English & mathematics at minimum Grade C or equivalent
  • An interest in communication and language

What can I progress to? On completion of the Level 3 course, further qualifications are available including:

  • Level 4 courses
  • Signature BSL qualifications
  • Signature Level 3 Award in Insights into Communication with Congenitally
  • Signature Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Sign Language Interpreting
  • Signature Level 6 Diploma in Sign Language Translation

What else do I need to know?

This certificate has a credit value of 36, and 360 hours of learning in total. The recommended guided hours are 185 with evidence of another 175 hours of directed or self-directed learning. Candidates must complete at least 40 hours of learning support practice with deaf learners. There will be a minimum of 4 observations of practice.
