This face-to-face course is designed to equip teachers and classroom assistants with practical strategies\, insights\, and tips to enhance the mobility experience for the CYPVIs they support. It can also serve as a refresher for Habilitation Specialists and QTVIs. \nThe course will focus on supporting environmental awareness\, orientation\, directionality\, sensory skills\, and fundamental concepts that are essential for CYPVIs to be aware\, informed\, and actively involved when an adult is manoeuvring their wheelchair. If every teacher made their documents accessible transcribers would be able to create text-based documents for large print and braille users much more efficiently. \nThis full day course will give you hands-on\, practical experience of creating accessible Word and PowerPoint documents\, including how to use headings and how to insert a table to make it accessible for a screen reader user. \nThe afternoon session will cover how to create accessible Maths materials that will allow documents to be embossed correctly in braille. The final session will show you how to create Word documents in a Modern Foreign Language (MFL) and English\, thereby allowing the document to be embossed in the correct braille code for both English and the MFL. \nPlease note this is a practical course. All participants must bring their own laptop running Windows. There will be a focus on strategies and tools to support autism and combined sensory impairments. \n\n\nSDS is the national governing and coordinating body for disability sport in Scotland. It leads\, develops\, and promotes sport and physical activity for people of all ages and abilities who have a physical\, sensory\, or learning disability by providing opportunities for participation and competition\, supporting a network of Branches and partners (including local authorities and Sports Governing Bodies)\, delivering Disability Inclusion Training to the Scottish sporting workforce and supporting disabled athletes. \n\n\n\nTarget Audience\nPhysical Education teachers\, Sports coaches\, Specialist teachers\, Teaching assistants \nPresenters\nAlison Shaw is Education and Learning Manager\, SDS. Alison manages a team of approximately 60 Disability Inclusion Training tutors who deliver a wide range of Disability Inclusion Training and Boccia courses across Scotland. \nHollie Fullerton is a PhD Researcher at Queen Margaret University studying Neurodivergent Young People and Sport. They work as the Training and Development Officer at LEAP Sports\, delivering LGBTIQ+ Inclusion training across Scotland. Hollie is a member of the Scottish Disability Sport Young Persons’ Sport Panel\, and a tutor with SDS on the DIT\, DIS\, and Autism courses. Hollie’s main sporting background is in Trampoline Gymnastics\, where they have recently qualified as a National judge. Hollie was the first trans/non-binary person to captain a sports team at the University of Glasgow\, where they studied for a Masters in Primary Education\, with a dissertation exploring the barriers to physical education for young people and teachers with disabilities. \nGrace Lawther is studying Psychology and Sociology at the University of Stirling. She sits on the SDS Young Person’s Sports Panel (YPSP) and is also the current YPSP administrator. She regularly writes about her experiences as a young autistic woman through her blog and published writing. Grace is passionate about football\, having played in the National Performance League and selected for the Edinburgh Sports Academy. Since working with SDS\, she has also become a qualified Boccia official. Towards the end of this session\, we will also cover listening skills. \nPart Two (The Practice Phase) – 10 hours in person \nYou will receive an informative introduction to Humanistic Therapy\, one of the tenets of person-centred therapy. You will be guided through engaging content followed by thought-provoking questions designed to enhance your learning. You will be provided with scenarios\, and practical tips so that you can empower adults and families impacted by hearing loss. It does not prepare delegates to carry out the masking procedure\, and where masking is required\, there must be local protocols in place for referral to a suitably qualified audiological professional. Otoscopy shall be carried out by the delegate to decide whether contraindications exist\, and/or if there is any doubt about whether the procedure should continue. In such cases referral must be made to a suitably qualified audiological or medical professional. \nTympanometry shall be used as part of a battery of tests to identify any abnormalities of the middle or outer ear. This training course prepares delegates to interpret tympanometry traces and to explain results to patients/clients and/or refer appropriately.
