SUMMARY:BATOD North Study Day
DESCRIPTION:Booking link – click here \nContact batodnorth@batod.org.uk for any further information \n“Keynote Speaker: Imy Harris \nVogue Model\, Deaf Advocate and Contestant on The Great Pottery Throw Down 2025 \nImy was born deaf and growing up relied on hearing aids and lip reading for communication. In 2023\, she had cochlear implant surgery and\, as well as now being able to hear better than before\, she can enjoy music clearly for the first time. When she left school\, she travelled solo to Australia\, Thailand and Bali\, which was challenging due to her disability and the language barriers. After returning home\, she took a pottery class and became hooked. She loves to take her hearing aids out and get lost in the clay. \nWith her recent feature in the iconic British Vogue and time on the popular Great Pottery Throw Down\, we are keen to find out where this all started for Imy and her plans going forward. Join us as Imy shares her experiences growing up deaf in a hearing world\, the excitement and challenges of cochlear implants\, and her desire to challenge perceptions around disability\, deafness\, and beauty standards. \nImy welcomes questions from the deaf children and young people we work with. During the keynote will record and collate Imy’s responses to these questions\, to be distributed back to our students. Please send any questions\, written or recorded to batodnorth@batod.org.uk before 3rd October 2025. \nThis one day event includes workshop presentations with a specific focus on deaf education including: \nMorning Workshops 11:15 – 12:15: \n\nMaking Sense of Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder (ANSD) in Infants – Dr Kai Uus\nNational Deaf Children’s Society – Keeping it REAL\nDeafness & Dyslexia – Jane Angus\nManchester Alumni:\n\n\nAndrea Varey: From Cant to Can: Empowering Deaf Traveller Children and Young People.\nNatasha Carlton: How to Facilitate a caregiver coaching model at a deaf playgroup.\nEmily Parke: How to create a sustainable pen pal programme which supports the development of deaf pupils’ writing\, whilst enabling them to connect with deaf peers.\n\nAfternoon Workshops 14:15 – 15:15: \n\nMaking Sense of Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder (ANSD) in Infants- Dr Kai Uus\nDestination Deaflympics\nMulti-Sensory Impairment – Seashell Trust\nTechnology in everyday life – Grace Pinson-Bradley\n\nPlease note that Dr Kai Uus’ presentation will be a repeat of the morning session. \nInterpreters: Please feel free to bring your BSL interpreter to this work related event\, you can use Access to Work for this\, but note if they require lunch\, a separate lunch ticket will need to be purchased. SUMMARY:BATOD Scotland twilight session (6th October at 4pm - 5.30pm)- smiLE therapy
DESCRIPTION:BATOD Scotland twilight session (6th October at 4pm – 5.30pm)- smiLE therapy \nFor further information contact batodscotland@batod.org.uk \nBooking form available here \n“What is smiLE Therapy and how does it work in a mainstream primary Enhanced Deaf Provision in Ayrshire? \nThis presentation will give an introduction to smiLE Therapy and show how it was successfully implemented in practice in Elderbank Primary Enhanced Deaf Provision. \nsmiLE Therapy (Strategies & Measurable Interaction in Live English) was created explicitly to teach pragmatics to Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) students. That is\, how we use language to support effective social interaction. It gives DHH students a structured and meaningful way to learn essential communication and social skills for everyday encounters in the mainstream world. \nDHH children face disadvantages in everyday encounters\, well documented in research. Language deprivation means they miss out on learning the pragmatics of language. Research highlights difficulties across the range of social communication skills including reduced ability to repair communication breakdown\, maintain conversation\, negotiate\, problem solve and self-advocate. Consequently\, learning potential from social interactions is reduced\, often with long term consequences into adulthood. \nsmiLE Therapy uses authentic situations\, before and after therapy videos of real interaction\, guided role play\, develops Theory of Mind and actively supports transferring of skills to the wider environment through parent workshops. Outcome measures are clear\, measurable and visual. \nSince 2009\, smiLE Therapy has extended to DeafPlus students\, students with Down Syndrome\, Developmental Language Disorders\, Learning Difficulties\, Multi Sensory Impairment and Physical Disability. smiLE Therapy is also used with some Autistic students\, where there are strict criteria\, and where delivery is neurodiverse-affirming. smiLE Therapy is used in mainstream and specialist schools across primary\, secondary\, post 16 and 18-25 college settings. \nLinda Montgomery and Jenna Quirk\, QTODs\, working at Elderbank Primary\, will share how they introduced smiLE Therapy in their Enhanced Deaf Provision\, how it developed\, the challenges they’ve faced and overcome to achieve success for their pupils and families\, other staff and themselves. \nKarin Schamroth is the creator of smiLE Therapy and a specialist Speech & Language Therapist. Karin & her team train Teachers\, Therapists\, SENDCOs & OTs nationally and internationally. \nSchamroth & Curtin (July 2025). Using smiLE Therapy to develop pragmatic skills. SUMMARY:Humanistic Counselling Skills for Professionals Who Support Families Impacted by Hearing Loss - Birmingham
DESCRIPTION:“Are you a Teacher of the Deaf\, an Educational Audiologist\, a Rehabilitation Therapist or a Speech & Language Therapist. If so\, do you fancy some free counselling training\, equivalent to 14 hours of training? The course we offer is delivered in three parts. \nPart One (The Learn Phase) – 1.5 hours online \nYou will receive an introduction to counselling\, statistics pertaining to hearing loss-related mental health and an overview of why counselling support is beneficial for this group. Towards the end of this session\, we will also cover listening skills. \nPart Two (The Practice Phase) – 10 hours in person \nYou will receive an informative introduction to Humanistic Therapy\, one of the tenets of person-centred therapy. You will be guided through engaging content followed by thought-provoking questions designed to enhance your learning. You will be provided with scenarios\, and practical tips so that you can empower adults and families impacted by hearing loss. You will also get an opportunity to practice those counselling skills. \nPart Three (The Master Phase) – 2.5 hours online \nYou will now get an opportunity to present a brief case study based on your practice. This is made easy using a template we provide. All case studies are anonymised to ensure confidentiality\, but as a group we will come together online to provide feedback\, drawing on the humanistic skills we have learnt. \nDATES FOR BIRMINGHAM \nPart 1: September 3rd at 6PM (online) \nPart 2: September 12th and 13th (in person) \nPart 3: October 8th or 9th* at 6PM (online) \n* A second provisional date is provided for Part 3. For groups larger than 12\, the cohort will be divided into two so we can complete Part 3. You will have a choice of either date if you are in a group of 12 or more. You do not need to attend both dates in Part 3. \nIf you are interested\, click on the links below to find out more. If you apply before the deadline for your chosen location\, your course may be sponsored by MED-EL. \nLINK: https://beheardbymedel.com/professionals/humanistic.html“
