SUMMARY:AVUK - Parent Coaching in early intervention with deaf children
DESCRIPTION:Early intervention is associated with improved outcomes when working with deaf babies and preschool children. Similarly\, parental engagement has long been documented as leading to positive outcomes in language acquisition of deaf children (Calderon\, 2000; DesJardin\, et al.\, 2006; Zaidman-Zait et al\, 2017) but we need to go beyond mere parental ‘involvement‘. We need to find ways to enable parents to confidently take forward the strategies being suggested by the therapist/teacher. \nThis webinar will focus on the use of specific parent-coaching techniques in early intervention. We will look at how we can best empower parents and adapt the way messages are delivered to enable greater understanding and engagement in their child’s early intervention programme. \nAttendees can apply for 5 CEUs upon completion of the webinar. \n  \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES: \n\nLearn about the five characteristics of parent coaching in early childhood intervention\nIdentify different adult learning styles to help you tailor your sessions based on the caregiver’s learning styles\nApply the principles of parent coaching to plan goals for the parents/caregivers\n\n  \nPresenter bio: Noel Kenely \nNoel is a Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist and a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist. He is one of the clinical leads at AVUK where he delivers therapy to families of deaf babies and preschool deaf children\, as well as providing training to other professionals in AV therapy. \nNoel has worked in the field of deafness for over 20 years\, initially working as a Sign Language Interpreter in Malta.
