SUMMARY:AVUK online course - Play schema
DESCRIPTION:Play Schema\nThursday 30th January 2020 10am (GMT) \nAudition and play are at the heart of each Auditory Verbal therapy (AVT) session. In order for AVT to be effective we need to give the child the best-possible listening experience through the right technology and acoustic environment. Likewise\, a child needs the best-possible playful experience to learn language. \nPlaying involves more than taking out a box of toys from the cupboard. Schematic pedagogy (Atherthon & Nutbrown\, 2016) looks at how children’s play schema can be used to support their learning. In this webinar we will explore the latest research in play schemas and guided play and how this can be used to develop listening and spoken language strategies. \nThis webinar compliments our Three P’s of Play online webinar on Thursday 30th January 2020 at 2pm (GMT) \nMore information is available here.

SUMMARY:Joining the dots: social competence and hearing loss at primary school
DESCRIPTION:“We are hardwired to connect with others\, it’s what gives purpose and meaning to our lives.”  Brené Brown \nThere are ever increasing options and solutions offered by hearing technology.  There are more ways to connect wirelessly than ever before. Watching teenagers’ seamlessly streaming music and phone calls to their hearing technology. Young children using TV streamers so that their favourite television programmes is at a level perfect for their hearing loss. \nHowever there is still no magic adaptor for making and keeping friends. No magic software to interpret the thoughts and feelings of those around us to help us learn how to socially problem solve and multi task. Talk to parents and they will tell you\, technology is wonderful and clear speech and academic success for their children with hearing loss is important.  But what they really want to know is whether their child is happy\, communicating well with peers and thriving socially. \nOur Joining the Dots training courses address how we as professionals can support these vital skills for thinking socially. With specific courses for early years\, primary school and teenagers. \nBuy one ticket for £100\, bring a colleague for £50! \nUnderstanding what theory of mind is and why it is important is has become a hot topic for working with deaf children. This course will focus on the primary age years\, with a brief overview of what theory of mind is and then into the resources\, activities and ways that it can be encouraged\, including how to be effective social thinkers. It will explore how children’s ability to know\, guess\, think and feel about the world and people around them impacts on building friendships as well as accessing the curriculum. \nBook your place here

SUMMARY:Imaginative Play
DESCRIPTION:Imaginative Play\nA platform for learning for young children with hearing loss \nDATE: 26 November 2019\nVENUE: The Ear Foundation\, Nottingham\nPRICE: Buy a place for £100\, bring a colleague for £50!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDo you work with young children with hearing loss and their families? Do you support young children with hearing loss in a preschool or nursery? Are you interested in knowing what you can do to include more purposeful play as a basis for learning? \nYoung children problem solve and learn about other people’s perspectives by playing ‘schools’ or ‘mums and dads’ – such activities\, allow even very young children to use their imaginations to contemplate different possibilities. \nWhen we reflect and problem solve\, we use our imaginations to think things through. This uniquely human ability enables us to imagine different outcomes and then act in the way we think is best\, or learn from past experience to change our behaviour for next time.  These complex skills begin developing during infancy and develop throughout childhood. \nChildren with hearing loss often have delayed development of symbolic and imaginative play in addition to language skills. Attend this workshop to learn about the normal development sequence and useful assessments. You will leave with practical ideas so you can support children to develop these skills for better long term outcomes. \nClick here for more information.
