This workshop was well attended in both the morning and afternoon sessions. Methods of video analysis already in use and known to participants were reviewed, including the Tait video analysis and Parent-Child Interaction Therapy PCI. |

| Learning from success - high achieving deaf pupils | 23 | Dr Steve Powers, University of Birmingham, summarises the report of research that was funded by RNID. The two main aims of the study were first, to raise expectations by highlighting the potential and achievements of deaf pupils and second, to learn from the perspectives and experiences of high achieving deaf pupils, their families and teachers to improve the quality of provision for all deaf children. The report identifies key findings and makes some recommendations, but probably its greatest value is in the richness of detail in the individual narratives. The report should leave the reader with no doubt of the outstanding potential of deaf children. |

| Update on CSW training and Code of Practice | 9 | Following an article in the March Magazine Wendy Martin, CSW Officer, CACDP wrote to explain that recently there has been some confusion over the availability of Edexcel's Professional Development Award in Communication Support Work with Deaf Learners. Although it is not listed on the Edexcel website, the Award is still available: Edexcel has temporarily extended its life and several colleges are currently offering it. | Special Needs 4 You | 50 | Angie Ray and her friend Yvonne have set up a website (www.spn4u.com) to provide information and contacts for parents of children who, they suspect, have something 'wrong'. Information is not always easily accessible and it also depends very much on the area you live as to the help that is available. The do say that they cannot make diagnosis of conditions, nor would they attempt to, but they hope that by sharing information with others in a similar situation we can at least help lessen the frustration that our special world of special needs can bring. |

In October 2004 Sign donated bulk copies of the ABC WOW Book to selected schools. In April 2005, Sign and WOW won a project award. The publicity from this project generated funds enabling Sign to extend this donation of books to schools and agencies. |

| Personality Profiler | 45 | Stevie Mayhook, Education Consultant, Ewing Foundation reviews the 'Personality Profiler: dozens of proven ways to assess your character and see if you have what it takes to succeed in business and relationships'. Although perhaps not of the highest educational usefulness she feels that, for the teacher who likes to generate their own resources, this is a good starting point and could provide some useful activities for use in PSHE/tutorial periods. |

| Getting it right | 46 | Andrea Baker, Peripatetic Teacher of the Deaf used the Ewing Foundation 'Getting It right: effective use of a personal FM system' in a training session for students and she highly recommends it. The participants were engaged throughout and eager to talk about what they had observed. The resulting discussion was animated and encompassed many issues relating to the auditory environment. An important addition to the toolkit of anyone involved in advisory work with deaf children and their teachers. |
| You and your child: making sense of learning disabilities | 48 | Jo Franklin, Advisory Teacher for the Deaf feels the book fulfils its aim and has much to recommend it to parents of a child with any disabilities, but probably it would be of most use to families of Deaf children with additional disabilities who need empowering but don't want to be overwhelmed with too much information and who want to hear other parents� stories. For these parents this could prove to be a very helpful book, and one that we 'part-time' experts could happily recommend. |

This was a meeting arranged following BATOD's annual submission to the School Teachers' Review Body. The opportunity was used to press home the importance of recognising and valuing the role of 'unattached' teachers and reiterated our view about SEN allowances. |
