Microtia and Me website – Stories from people with experience of microtia for support through everyday life, designed to provide general information and support about microtia.
“This website was developed as part of Saira Hussain’s PhD at Aston University. Saira is an audiologist and lecturer who teaches students training to work in audiology. She has previously worked in the NHS, where she enjoyed working with children and families.
Although she did not see many patients with microtia, her interest in this area grew through research with colleagues from Aston University, funded by the Microtia UK. This research explored how parents make decisions for their child when there is a unilateral hearing difference. You can read all about this study here.
That work showed that decision making is often a careful balance. Parents try to do what feels right for their child, while also supporting their child’s growing independence and involvement in choices as they get older.”
