UK Deaf Sport’s fun and motivational Destination Deaflympics activities

Posted in News

“UK Deaf Sport’s fun and motivational Destination Deaflympics activities brought students together across two linked mainstream Deaf Resource Bases at Manor and Cove schools, connecting primary and secondary students who hadn’t previously known each other.

Teachers of Deaf Children and Young People and Deaf Instructors found the programme quick and easy to implement, helping students build friendships, develop confidence and create their own deaf community within a mainstream school. It also gave quieter primary students opportunities to develop leadership skills and inspired young people to think about their own sporting ambitions.

If you are an education professional working with deaf young people in mainstream education, find out how you can bring Destination Deaflympics to your setting.

Explore how the programme was delivered in a Deaf School at the Deaf Academy in Exmouth.

Highlights are:

– Classroom impact: Teachers report children return to class more focused, settled, and ready to learn after doing the programme activities
– Social impact: Improved physical and social communication, development of teamwork leadership skills

– Involvement in sport: Increased take up of school sport and clubs, increased interest and take up in clubs and sport out of school
