NEW RESEARCH UPDATE
CELEBRATING ONE MILLION IMPLANTS!
Brian Lamb has pulled together another really useful Research Roundup – recent papers useful for advocacy work. Celebrating one million CI go to
https://doi.org/10.1121/10.0012825  to read Fan-Gang Zeng’s article, Celebrating the one millionth cochlear implant.

The Research Roundup also covers Health Literacy, Changing Guidelines and Cognitive Decline. Brian summarises the papers and gives points for policy work. Go to https://ciicanet.org/community/research-roundups/

USEFUL FIGURES ON   EDUCATIONAL PROVISION
The British Association of Teachers of Deaf Children and Young People, BATOD, have really useful reports and resources on our website, useful for all those involved with deaf children and young people.

They publish the reports from Consortium for Research in Deaf Education (CRIDE) annually at CRIDE reports – BATOD

These reports are unique, providing annual information about deaf children in the UK and their educational provision. They are really helpful to influence policy and practice.

In our Young People’s CIICA LIVE event, Helen Willis spoke about Listening and Cognitive Effort and what we know from neuroscience to help manage this – go to www.ciicanet.org/events to  see her captioned presentation.

If you go to  https://www.batod.org.uk/going-for-gold-a-resource-for-empowering-deaf-children-with-cochlear-implants-to-manage-listening-effort/ you will find two resources from Helen: one for children and one for adults.

EuroTrak Reports
Low Awareness of CI in France; data for advocacy
EuroTrak reports, established by EHIMA to survey countries about hearing aid useage and awareness, have recently included useful questions on CI awareness.
Have a look at the reports on Germany and France and see how little awareness there is even there of cochlear implantation. For example in France:

72% of the population in France have never heard of Cochlear Implants.

Only 14% of the HA owners with severe/profound HL have been informed about CIs by a medical professional.

This is unacceptable – Go to https://www.ehima.com/surveys/  for the detail and use it in your advocacy work!

ACCESSIBILITY: AT NADP CONFERENCE

Lidia Best, Chair of National Association of Deafened People, and President of European Federation of Hard of Hearing, is passionate about Accessibility – and this was a focus at their recent conference. Speakers from Sky introduced their commitment to 100% captioning, with a fascinating video about how it is done, and gave a demonstration of Sky Glass.

This was followed by XRAI, showing us their glasses with subtitles built in – captioning real life. Go to https://xrai.glass/  to have a look!

Lidia’s passion for Accessibility supported hearing loss being included in the European Accessibility Act.
