The National Tutoring Programme (NTP) provides additional support to schools (5-16) to help disadvantaged pupils whose education has been most affected by school closures. It consists of two pillars Tuition Partners and Academic Mentors.
Schools can choose to apply for the services of a tutor from a list of agreed partners. They will need to fund 25% of the total cost of the intervention from their own budget. Further information about catch-up funding, including for early years settings, special schools, specialist provisions and post-16 providers, is provided on the Department for Education website.
NTP targets children in receipt of Pupil Premium, but settings can use the programme to support any child they believe will benefit. It could be argued that many deaf children have been disproportionately disadvantaged by school closures and would benefit from 1:1 and small group interventions.
However, we are also aware that NTP tuition partners may not have expertise in and specialist knowledge of supporting deaf pupils and therefore we would encourage schools to seek advice and support from sensory services before making a decision about what provision would be most effective.
The scheme has been extended until 2022.
