“Does background noise affect Communication Support Workers’ (CSWs’) ability to process BSL?”

This research explores how classroom background noise might impact CSWs’ ability to understand and process British Sign Language, with the broader goal of improving support for Deaf students in educational settings.

We are currently looking for any current or former CSWs to take part in this study, which involves:

  • A short demographic questionnaire
  • A noise check
  • A hearing check
  • A BSL to spoken English translation task (in both quiet and noisy conditions)
  • An auditory memory task

Participants will be entered into a draw to win one of two £50 Amazon vouchers.

Participation is entirely voluntary, and all data will be kept confidential and anonymised in accordance with Lancaster University’s data protection policies.

If there is anyone known that you believe may be interested in participating or learning more, I would be very grateful if you could share this opportunity. The flyer is attached above and the link to participate is: https://run.pavlovia.org/E.L.Smith/bsl_in_noise

Please feel free to contact me directly at [email protected] for further details or to express interest.
