“Dear colleagues,
in 2012 and 2018, we conducted studies to examine the use of technology in sign language assessment. The results were published in 2015 and 2023, respectively*.
Seven years after the last survey (2018), Tobias Haug from the University of Teacher Education in Special Needs Zurich (HfH) is conducting another survey. The goal of this survey is to see how the use of technology in sign language assessment has changed over time by comparing the results to those of the previous two surveys (2012, 2018).
In the context of this survey, we use the term “technology” (including AI) as an umbrella term for
- computer- or mobile-based test delivery
- local or cloud-based tests
- eliciting responses from test takers
- (semi-)automatically recognizing signed performances of test takers
- (semi-)automatically scoring test takers’ performances and
- providing (semi-)automatically feedback to test takers.
The survey is intended for deaf and hearing professionals who are involved in one or more of the following activities:
- teaching sign languages,
- developing sign language assessments,
- administering sign language assessments,
- scoring sign language assessments, and/or
- researching sign language assessments.
The results of this survey will help us to get a clearer picture of the extent to which technology is being used in our field and will provide a basis for strengthening international collaboration.
The survey takes about 30 minutes to complete. All personal data will be treated confidentially. The results of this survey will be published in a peer-reviewed journal.
The survey will be available until September 30, 2025.
