Update from authors

“Some time ago, through an article in one of the beautiful BATOD magazines, we shared information and experiences with you about the ToM training we developed for children who are deaf or hard of hearing. These ToM trainings are described in our Dutch-language books ‘Theory of Mind – From yourself to the other’ and ‘Theory of Mind – Feelings, thoughts and intentions’. We are pleased to share with you that the first book: ‘Theory of Mind – From yourself to the other’ is now also available in English.

Brief description of the book

Due to reduced ‘incidental learning’, children who are deaf or hard of hearing miss out on social learning opportunities that contribute to the development of a Theory of Mind (ToM). This can make it more difficult for them to empathise with the feelings, thoughts and intentions of others. A delay in Theory of Mind skills affects children’s social-emotional development. These skills become especially important when children enter primary school, where they are expected to form friendships, play cooperatively, and work in groups. Early support and intervention can play a vital role in preventing future difficulties.

This book presents the ToM training programme, developed for deaf and hard of hearing children aged 5-9. It offers a programme for children and a parallel programme for parents. This encourages the application of learning to everyday situations. Through a wide variety of playful and engaging exercises, children learn to better understand themselves and others. This allows them to be more attuned to the feelings, thoughts and intentions of others. Parents learn how to support their child effectively in everyday situations. The themes and activities in both tracks are carefully aligned and help children apply what they learn in daily life. The book contains both theoretical frameworks and practical tools for professionals and a wide variety of activities for children and their parents.

Practical information

· In addition to the ToM training described, the book contains a description of the theory on the concept of Theory of Mind, ToM development in children who are deaf or hard of hearing and background information on the ToM training.

· The second part contains the children’s programme. This is built with a fixed structure, with a variation of playful and appropriate exercises. Each session focuses on a topic.

· The third part of the book describes the parent programme. Here, too, a topic is central. Parents receive information on the topic and become aware of how they can support their child in everyday situations.

· Each lesson description starts with a theoretical explanation. It gives the trainers a theoretical framework to support action.

· To make the book internationally appropriate for different languages and cultural backgrounds, practical elements have been added. This English translation also includes an addition for optional individual practice and treatment, which can be used when forming a group is not possible.

· The book provides access to digital study materials.

· Cost of the book: €35.45 excluding postage.

· Book can be ordered from the authors (Evelie Wesselink and Anke van der Meijde – [email protected] )
