At this event, Gwen Carr, independent consultant in the field of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention, will present the findings from her recent research into informed choice in practice in Scotland.

Jane Gallacher, Lead Clinician for the Scottish network for Deaf Children and Young People Hearing Impairment Network for Children and Young People (HINCYP), NHS National Services Scotland, will also set out her reflections on the findings for professional practice in Scotland.

This event is for all specialist professionals who support families of deaf children in the early years in Scotland – including audiologists, speech and language therapists, Qualified Teachers of Deaf Children and Young People and educational audiologists.

The research investigates how families experience informed choice and perceive the impact of information they receive on their decision making about language and communication for their child in Scotland. The report contains a number of important findings. For example, it found that many families talked positively about the support they had received. Professionals also spoke about the importance of putting the family first and being led by their needs. At the same time, the report sets out how unconscious bias and assumptions may have limited the information that families receive from professionals.

This event will provide an opportunity learn more about the research and to discuss and reflect on the findings.

The research was funded by the National Deaf Children’s Society. You can find out more about the research by reading their summary for parents and the full report.

This event is limited to those who work in Scotland. A separate event will run later on the 23rd June for professionals who work elsewhere in the UK.

This webinar will have British Sign Language interpretation support.

Zoom captions will be used for this webinar.
