Workshop on new EAL resource from NDCS

National Deaf Children’s Society
19th March 2019
8:00am - 5:00pm

Description

Do you want to improve the way you support deaf children who are new to the UK and are learning English as an additional language (EAL)?

This workshop has been created to help Teachers of the Deaf and other education professionals, including mainstream professionals, who are working with deaf children who speak English as an additional language.

Deaf children who are new to the UK and do not speak English as their first language are likely to face more challenges than hearing children who are EAL learners. This course helps you to understand and address those challenges.

This workshop will explain the issues and outline strategies to address them. You’ll leave the workshop with new ideas and approaches to ensure the best possible outcomes for deaf children.

Topics covered:

  • Tools or assessments to identify deaf EAL children’s language skills and to monitor progress
  • Issues to consider when working with deaf children and their families where English is an additional language
  • Teaching strategies and styles to support deaf EAL learners in school
  • How to work effectively with other professionals, such as interpreters, bilingual teaching assistants and EAL coordinators.

Please note that this workshop is focused on deaf children who speak English as an additional language because they are new to the UK, rather than deaf children whose first language is British Sign Language.
