Merton Sensory Support Service (MSSS) is seeking an enthusiastic and skilled Qualified Teacher of Deaf Children and Young People (QToD) to join our friendly, supportive and highly regarded team. This is an exciting opportunity to work within a well-established service dedicated to helping deaf children and young people achieve their full potential.

As part of Merton’s Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Integrated Service (SENDIS), we support deaf children and young people from birth to 25, working collaboratively with families and educational settings to remove barriers to learning, participation and achievement, and promote positive outcomes.

About the role

Working across a variety of educational and community settings, you will manage your own caseload of children and young people with deafness and other hearing support needs, including Auditory Processing Disorder (APD). Your role will include a blend of advisory support, direct teaching, family-centred intervention, strategic work with schools and partner agencies and Service development.

You will:

Provide specialist assessments, advice and teaching support for deaf children and young people.
Work closely with families offering guidance, encouragement and practical support.
Build strong relationships with education settings to promote inclusive practice and high-quality provision.
Deliver training to school staff, parents and professionals to increase understanding of deafness and effective support strategies.
Utilise specialist technologies and assistive listening equipment to enhance access to learning and communication.
Work collaboratively with health professionals, Educational Psychologists, social care colleagues and other partners to achieve the best outcomes for children and families.

About you

We are looking for a passionate and knowledgeable Qualified Teacher of Deaf Children & Young people

You will:

Hold the Mandatory Qualification for Teaching Deaf Children and Young People (QToD).
Have successful teaching experience within educational settings.
Possess a strong understanding of the impact of deafness on learning, communication and development.
Be confident in the use of specialist technologies and strategies that promote access and inclusion.
Have experience of working collaboratively with families and across multi-agency teams.
Be skilled in delivering training and advice to a wide range of audiences.
Demonstrate excellent communication, organisational and relationship-building skills.
Have a thorough understanding of safeguarding, child protection, SEND legislation and inclusive practice.

Additional information

A full driving licence and access to a vehicle are desirable, as travel across the borough is required. An Essential Car User allowance, parking permit and mileage reimbursement are provided. This post is subject to an Enhanced DBS check and is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.
