Teacher of Deaf Children and Young People (Maternity Cover) – Isle of Wight

Fixed-term contract until end of January 2028 – 37 hours per week, term time only

This role is office-based; however, it also offers some agile or remote working and conducting home visits across the Island

The Isle of Wight Specialist Teacher (STA) Service is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Teacher of Deaf Children and Young People (QTOD) to join the Service on a maternity cover basis. This rewarding peripatetic role supports deaf babies, children and young people to achieve their full potential through specialist teaching, assessment and collaborative multi-agency working.

About the Role

Carry out specialist assessments, teaching and monitoring visits for deaf children and young people in educational settings.
Support families of pre-school deaf children through home visits, nursery provision, and early years settings.
Advise schools and settings on inclusive teaching strategies, resources and adaptations to reduce barriers to learning.
Undertake functional audiological assessments and monitor the impact of deafness on learning and development.
Recommend and support the use of specialist hearing and assistive technologies.
Work closely with families and as part of a multi-disciplinary team to promote positive outcomes for deaf children and young people.
Promote inclusion, communication access and language development across a range of modalities to support the educational achievement of deaf children and young people.
About you

Qualified Teacher with a minimum of three years’ teaching experience.
Experience of working with children and young people with SEND.
Excellent communication, organisational and report-writing skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively across a range of settings.
Teacher of the Deaf qualification or strong interest in the specialism.
Some knowledge or competence in British Sign Language preferable, but not essential.
Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle for Island-wide travel.
A current valid UK driving licence is essential, ideally with a suitable vehicle, however a pool car may be available for this role.
