About Us
Northgate is a vibrant, multi-cultural primary school situated very close to Crawley town centre. We are very proud to have a Special Support Centre for children who are D/deaf. Our SSC (The Orchard) is a 15 place unit for children with severe to profound hearing loss. The Orchard team consists of two Teachers of the Deaf and several Special Support Assistants. The children in The Orchard are all part of a mainstream class. The support we provide is a combination of in class support and additional support/interventions in the SSC as required by each pupil. Our children have a mixture of communication preferences: oral, SSE and BSL.

We can offer:
• Happy and purposeful working environment with a strong ethos of supporting our D/deaf pupils within the school and in their daily lives.
• Pupils who are enthusiastic, full of curiosity and eager to learn.
• Being part of the SSC team that is experienced and skilled in working with D/deaf pupils.
• A supportive mainstream school team who want to develop their Deaf awareness.
• If the successful candidate is not yet a Teacher of the Deaf, funding is available for their training to become a Qualified Teacher of the Deaf.

What you need to succeed
• We are seeking to appoint either a Qualified Teacher of the Deaf OR a Teacher who is willing to train to become a Qualified Teacher of the Deaf.  (The training for the mandatory qualification would be funded by the school).
• High expectations for Deaf children and good Deaf Awareness. Someone who is committed to ensuring that every child achieves their full potential in school.
• An understanding of deafness and how it impacts a child’s learning.
• Knowledgeable in creating and adapting learning resources for D/deaf learners. Some experience using Visual Phonics and Shape Coding is desirable.
• Confident communicating with children who have different communication preferences. The ideal candidate should be working at level 2 BSL (or have level 1 and an active interest in working towards level 2 BSL).
• Have a good understanding of audiology.
• Ability to work within a team and to direct others when needed.
